Google is discontinuing its reseller program. Booksellers will still be able to offer ebooks as affiliate partners listed on the Google Book Search pages, but not within their own stores. So if you log in to your local bookseller’s website and want to buy an ebook, you will get redirected rather than being able to download straight away; the bookseller will no longer make the sale, but only receive an affiliate fee from Google.
What struck me in the statement from Google is their mention of only having sixteen resellers. Some of these were large (like Powell’s and ABA – which in fact is made up of many many booksellers), but even so, sixteen is not an enormous number of trading partners.
So many questions.
